Nowadays there is the possibility to invest in a wide range of commodities such as coffee, cocoa, sugar, palladium, soybeans, oats, copper, cotton, corn, wheat, platinum, rice, etc.
It is possible to trade commodities in a variety of ways: using financial derivatives, assets with a strong direct correlation, proprietary certificates, etc. However, one of the best ways to trade commod ities is through a CFD broker (contracts for difference). These financial products allow us to open buy or sell positions on the financial asset we are interested in, without the need to physically own the underlying instrument and being able to profit from the real fluctuations of market prices.
CFDs also allow us to sell the financial asset (without having bought it previously), with the intention of buying it back when its price has fallen (opening a short position or “going short”). In this way it is possible to profit from both market rises and falls.
Some of the main advantages of investing in commodities through CFDs are:
- Commodities are a highly liquid and volatile market where large price swings are frequent and can allow investors with shorter-term trading strategies to make a quick profit.
- Commodities are often correlated with some currencies, whose economies are closely linked to the export of agricultural products. This is why many traders resort to trading certain commodities on the basis of the performance of certain currencies; or even shares in companies related to certain sectors.
- They provide the possibility of diversification and by trading CFDs we can obtain short-term profits, taking advantage of any slightest movement in the market (whether the price of the chosen instrument rises or falls, as mentioned above).
- Some commodities, such as platinum (one of the most expensive metals in the world, widely used in jewellery, medicine and dentistry), are considered as“safe havens” in certain periods of economic instability. It is possible to achieve returns even when the financial markets are in the doldrums thanks to safe haven assets.
- When investing in commodities with an online CFD broker, we can do so with low capital requirements as we have a characteristic and fundamental tool of these products: leverage, which will allow us to deposit only a small amount as a guarantee while we are trading and we can obtain profits of a much higher amount.
Within the entire universe of commodities, the trader has the possibility of choosing those that best suit his strategy, depending on their volatility and characteristics. The trader has at his disposal from agricultural products to metals, including energies. Depending on market timing, economic conditions, the value of the US dollar, etc., some commodities are more likely than others to start an upward (or downward) trend.
Having tested and analysed numerous online brokers, in the table above you can see what we consider to be the best brokers for investing in commodities. Depending on the broker you can find those that within this classification of commodities also include precious metals such as gold or silver or energy products such as oil.
In order to help differentiate between them, in the table above we have compiled online brokers that offer the possibility of investing in commodities such as agricultural products or materials such as platinum, copper, palladium, etc… To see those brokers suitable for investing in gold you can visit our section”Brokers to invest in gold” and in the case of oil we have the section “Brokers to invest in oil”.
